Brother

Nectario María

The greatest scholar and the one who has written the most detailed history of the apparition and miracles of the Virgin of Coromoto has been Brother Nectario Maria, known as the Apostle of Coromoto, belonging to the congregation of the Christian Brothers, he came as a professor and showed great interest in scientific research.   He excelled as an educator, geologist, geographer, cartographer, seismologist, mineralogist, historian.

Brother Nectario María researched and wrote the first booklet on the Virgin of Coromoto in 1944 under the pseudonym H. Chonei Mereigua, which in the indigenous language means Son of Mary.

Brother Nectario published the Superior History of Venezuela and the General History of Venezuela, the Geography of Venezuela (1929). The following year he published the Physical Map of Venezuela, the Political Map of Venezuela, the General Map of Venezuela, the Physical and Political Map of the State of Lara, the Geological Map of the same state, and later the History of America. He got to the historical research because of his Marian devotion. When his immense desire to glorify the Mother of God led him, in 1915, to carry out research in order to clarify and write in a documented manner the history of the Virgin in Venezuela; this work was named Venezuela Mariana. Documentary history of the origins of Acarigua. History of the Portuguesa State. The Wonderful History of the apparition of Our Lady of Coromoto and Portuguese origins. Historical study on the foundation of the town of Nuestra Señora de La Paz de Guanarito. Juan Fernandez de Leon, founder of Guanare.

He died in Caracas on October 3, 1986.

On October 2, 2013, the De La Salle Brothers and the International Academy of Hagiography transferred the remains of Brother Nectario María to the Shrine of Our Lady of Coromoto, as was his wish. He is buried there.

Monsignor Angel Adolfo Polachini, Monsignor Omar Ramos Cordero and Monsignor Alfonso de Jesus Alfonzo Vaz have been great workers to promote the construction of the Basilica and the devotion to the Virgin of Coromoto. The Virgin of Coromoto was declared Patroness of Venezuela by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference on May 1, 1942. All Venezuelans are invited to visit her in her Temple where she wanted to remain to fill us with her grace, her light and her love.
