Special

Characteristics

One of the very special characteristics of this apparition is that Our Lady appeared to an entire family: to the family formed by the father and mother and to the extended family formed by the sister-in-law, the nephew and other children.

The apparition to the whole family is a request to promote, defend with courage and strengthen the Christian family based on the marital union between a man and a woman, in order to announce that Jesus Christ is our Savior God, "the Way, the Truth and the Life" (Jn 14:6), asking a couple to "convert" the whole tribe, that is to say, their entire society.

The Mother of God manifested the importance of family-society interdependence, indicating the need we all have to help each other: husband and wife, communicating through dialogue and a good relationship between them.

In this way, both acquired "an awareness of unity and achieved ever more fully the intimate union of their persons and activities. This intimate union, as the intimate self-giving of two persons, as well as the wellbeing of the children, demands full fidelity and urges in indissoluble unity" (GS 48).

The family is the place where the children of God are born through baptism and which has been sanctified by the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of love, with the great sacrament of marriage. The family is the miniature and the heart of the Church.

The fact that she appeared to a family speaks of a plea against affective and sexual libertinism. In the face of this threat, Our Lady invites us to respond with a commitment to promote and strengthen the family, to respect persons and to practice chastity through the control of the passions and respect for the person.

Sexual activity cannot be separated from the meaning of true love, the meaning of marriage that gives protection and stability to spouses and children, of a stable, loving and united family.

The sexual practice of the Christian should be an expression of authentic love, and be framed in the family united forever, with respect, affection and fidelity for life. This invitation is a rejection of sexual licentiousness, which sacrifices both the family and the respect due to women and children, and which leads to so many personal and social tragedies.

There are fundamental values within the natural dimension of marriage that are the same in every part of the world and in every age. Among them are love, fidelity, the dignity of the person, respect for life in all its phases.

The image of the Cacique with his family reminds us that the family is a natural and Christian value.  We are all born into a family. It is there that we learn to develop as persons and as a small society.

In the family we learn and live communication, tolerance, patience, mutual help. In the family, love is given and received, responsibilities are assumed, mutual respect is learned, solidarity is lived and one learns to love and praise God.

We see all this in the relationship of the couple, life in community and in the example of the Cacique's nephew who, having learned the courage, bravery and perseverance of his uncle, demonstrates it by going out to look for Juan Sanchez to show him the miracle performed by the Virgin. From what he saw in his family, the boy knew that courage, constancy, honesty and responsibility are virtues that allow him to see future fruits.

Our Lady invites to conversion within the Church that Christ founded: the Catholic Church.  She called the Cacique and all his people to be instructed in the Christian doctrine and to be baptized.

He asked him to first understand God's message by making it his own, to be baptized as a starting point to participate in the rest of the sacraments of the Catholic Church: Confession, Communion, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Marriage. And the Sacrament of Priestly Orders for those who wanted to give themselves completely to the service of God, men and women.

In the apparition in the river, the cacique and Coromoto and their family were not baptized, they were not children of the Grace of God.

But when the Virgin appeared with the Child King in her arms on the water of the river, their hearts were filled with Grace and that made them accept the proposal of the Virgin even without knowing her name or who she was.

By loving us as a family and within the Church (through Baptism), Our Lady of Coromoto wanted Venezuelans to turn our families into authentic "domestic Churches" called to reach a new protagonist and to produce a missionary dynamic within society.

The call of the Mother of God to Venezuelans is threefold:

1.- She encourages the institution of marriage.

2.- She invites to the construction of the family and to solidarity within it.

3.- She calls for conversion to Christ within the Catholic Church.

To listen to Our Lady is:

- To promote the sanctity of the family and to value the Christian conjugal union, sanctified by Jesus himself with the holy sacrament of marriage.

In the Apparition of Coromoto nothing is said about praying the Rosary, as Our Lady asked in Lourdes and Fatima.  In fact, the great masses of Coromoto pilgrims have as their spontaneous, popular, affectionate and repeated prayer, the irreplaceable Mysteries of the Rosary.  These are nothing more than remembering the life of Jesus Christ, our Savior, from his conception to his Ascension to heaven.

The Virgin of Coromoto holds the Child Jesus on her legs in an attitude of presenting Him to the world.  This makes the devotion to Coromoto to also have a strong connection with the Eucharist.

When we pray the Hail Mary we say: blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.  It is like saying to the Virgin: My Mother, thanks to You we have this immense treasure of the Eucharist.

Undoubtedly, she is the shortest way to Jesus.

The Rosary and the Eucharist, Mary and her son Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, form the central and medullar Mystery of our faith.

The spirituality of Coromoto, for more than three centuries, invites everyone to live as children of God, within the Church.

Mary of Coromoto continues to be the great Teacher who teaches the value of the family as the foundation and support of all catechesis.
